RuneScape: Dragonwilds is a separate, open-world survival crafting RPG set in the RuneScape universe. You explore Ashenfall, gather and process materials, build shelters, improve skills, complete quests and fight dragons. It is not a remaster of Old School RuneScape or a replacement for the existing RuneScape games.
Is it an MMO?
Do not expect the shared, persistent public world of a traditional RuneScape MMO. Dragonwilds has worlds that can be played solo or hosted for multiplayer. The Steam listing categorizes it as single-player, multiplayer, co-op and online co-op. Jagex’s 1.0 notes describe a world browser, optional crossplay worlds and dedicated servers. Those features make playing together easier, but do not turn every player’s adventure into one global MMO server.
Your existing RuneScape knowledge helps you recognize skills and names, yet survival systems matter here: you need food, shelter, equipment, materials and a safe route through regions. Skill Spells make gathering and combat more than a conventional crafting loop.
Can I play alone?
Yes. The official Switch 2 introduction describes heading into Ashenfall alone or with friends. Solo play means you can build and progress in your own world. Multiplayer adds a shared session; 1.0 also allows a host to choose crossplay when loading a world and supports a crossplay option for dedicated servers.
If your question is whether a friend on another platform can join, see crossplay and invite codes. If you are new to the survival loop, begin with your first hours before worrying about endgame raid preparation.
What changed at full launch?
Dragonwilds left Early Access on 15 September 2026. The full release added more platform choices, crossplay and the Scorned Wilderness region with the Kuldra endgame encounter. It also changed combat and equipment progression. Our 1.0 changes guide highlights the changes most likely to make an older walkthrough misleading.
What a new player actually does
The opening loop is easier to picture as quest → gather → process → build or equip → explore again. Your Journal points toward the next objective; materials and stations open crafting options; a small shelter gives you a return point. Combat, Ranged and Magic are skills and loadout choices rather than a one-time permanent class selection. Later regions introduce new materials, quests, bosses and travel options.
This is a survival adventure in a RuneScape setting, not the same client or progression system as Old School RuneScape or RuneScape. If you want to know whether the loop suits you, start with the first-hours guide and the official trailer on our home page. If your main question is whether friends on another platform can join, check the crossplay guide before buying.
