If combat feels different after returning for 1.0, that is not just a new weapon tier. Jagex changed how parries, special attacks, movement and several action windows work. The safest starting point is to read your current controls in game, then practice on a familiar enemy before attempting a boss.

Why a timed parry matters

Jagex says a successful parry now restores 50% of your maximum stamina. It also opens an optional Visceral Attack. “Optional” matters: you may instead dodge, retreat or spend the opening on another action. Parrying is a risk/reward decision, not an instruction to stand and trade blows until a meter fills.

Preserve enough stamina to defend yourself. A short attack sequence followed by observation is easier to adjust than committing to every hit of a long combo. The current game offers more ways to cancel attacks, gathering and spell casts with dodge or block, so a mistake in timing need not always lock you into the full animation.

Specials have their own resource

Special attacks now consume a portion of the Special Attack Bar, which recharges over time. A weapon’s ordinary attacks and its special can therefore have different opportunity costs. Do not compare two weapons only by a single base-damage number and then call one a universal winner. The gear guide deliberately avoids a fake ranking for this reason.

Jagex also added Sprint Attacks after unlocking the relevant Attack ability. Certain spells can be cast while moving, and the Skill Spell wheel gained four quick-cast positions. Reorder the spellbook and verify controller or keyboard bindings for your own platform. The 1.0 announcement documents these changes and controller button adjustments.

Ranged and Magic are alternatives, not fixed classes

The earlier Ranged update added a skill tree and bow-related spells. The 1.0 release added Wands as a faster, more mobile magic weapon type with lower damage output relative to a Staff. Use distance, the enemy’s behavior and your available supplies to decide what to carry; we have not verified an all-purpose “best class” or exact boss move timings.

Practice loop before a hard encounter

  1. Open the controls and verify your normal attack, special attack, block, dodge and spell shortcuts. Jagex changed controller attack assignments in 1.0.
  2. On a familiar enemy, make a short attack and observe its response. Stop attacking early enough to preserve a defensive option.
  3. Try a timed parry. On success, notice the stamina restoration and decide whether the Visceral Attack is safe; the opening does not force that follow-up.
  4. Spend a special attack deliberately, then watch the bar recharge. It is a separate resource from stamina.
  5. Test a dodge or block cancel during a low-risk action so you know what the new window feels like before using it in a boss fight.

These are practice steps, not unverified frame-perfect timings. The official notes confirm the mechanics; the correct timing still depends on the enemy, the attack and your input setup.

Which change solves which problem?

Problem you notice 1.0 tool to test
Running out of stamina after a defensive exchange A successful parry can restore 50% of maximum stamina.
Accidentally committing to a long action Try the new dodge or block cancellation window.
Special attack unavailable when you need it Treat the regenerating Special Attack Bar as a limited resource, not a free part of every combo.
Spells feel awkward on a controller Reorder the first four choices in the Skill Spell wheel and check their quick-cast mappings.

For boss-specific move lists, we would need repeatable current-build observations. We do not invent attack patterns from the general release notes.
