Fishing was added after the Dowdun Reach update, in version 0.11.1. It is now part of the game’s broader survival loop: fish can be cooked for healing, while the skill grows from a simple net to later equipment. If a launch-era 2025 article says Fishing is not available, that article is out of date.
Start with thread and a net
The official Fishing release notes give an unusually clear opening sequence. Unlock Coarse Thread using Flax and a Spinning Wheel, then craft a fishing net. Crafting the net prompts the quest with the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village. Speak to him and follow the new Journal objectives rather than assuming an ordinary rod is given automatically.
Jagex says the first rod becomes available after reaching Fishing level 3. Use the net to begin training and check the current skill menu for the exact unlock. The original notes describe a dozen fish types and later Skill Spells; they do not imply every type appears in the starting waters.
Put the catch to work
Fish are useful as cooked food to bring on exploration and combat trips. Jagex also describes pristine catches that can become decorative trophies. The 1.0 beginner guide emphasizes carrying meals and water before a vault or boss. Store a reserve at your base instead of eating every early catch immediately.
If a fishing interaction reports an unexpectedly low net tier, check current patch notes and the required equipment for that region. The original 0.11.1 notes documented a misleading tier message in some circumstances; do not assume every future occurrence is the same bug. We do not list unverified catch coordinates or invented rates.
