Mounts are progression rewards, not a starting option you have to configure before leaving the first village. Jagex added the Terrorbird with Fellhollow and later the Magic Carpet with Umbral Sands. Both help travel through the world, but the official notes connect them to different stages and quests.
Work toward the Terrorbird in Fellhollow
The Fellhollow update introduced mounts and named the Terrorbird as the first type. An earlier official roadmap post points players toward Vannaka in Fellhollow for a quest associated with unlocking one. The later Umbral notes refer to completing The Wild Hunt before mount customisation can be accessed.
For a new character, that means following the main route through earlier regions is more productive than hunting for a mount menu in the opening area. Keep the in-game Journal and current quest state as your primary step-by-step guide.
Magic Carpet is a later unlock
Jagex’s Umbral Sands update says the Magic Carpet is earned through Moon Garou quests. The same update added mount customisation variations. It explicitly says The Wild Hunt remains required for access to mount customisation even if a variation has otherwise been unlocked.
We have not independently checked every quest’s precise map marker or the crafting quantity of each mount option. This page distinguishes the verified unlock path and region, rather than presenting a speculative coordinate map. When a mount option seems absent, check the Journal for the named quest and your current region before searching for an exact coordinate from an old video. We have not tested whether every later hotfix kept the same prompt sequence, so the current quest log remains the final step-by-step authority.
